​Simple Strabismus? SS-OCT Reveals the Underlying Cause

A 3-year-and-6-month-old girl was noticed to have a strabismic appearance for over 2 years (fig.1). BCVA was measured at 0.7 in her right eye, while the left eye could only achieve 0.05. The corneal light reflex confirmed an inward deviation of about 5° in the left eye with notably poor fixation.

The color fundus images revealed that the fovea in the left eye shifted farther temporally- approximately 3.5 PD temporal to the disc, while in the right eye, the fovea sat in the right place- approximately 2.5 PD to the disc (fig.1 color fundus). High-resolution full-range SS-OCT (Yalkaid,TowardPi) was subsequently performed to confirm the findings. Although macular structure was found perfectly intact, the fovea–disc distance was notably increased in the left eye (fig. 2 OD: ~5 mm; OS: ~7 mm), confirming the diagnosis of congenital ectopia macula in her left eye without associated structural abnormalities.
