Research published in tvst investigated the retinal and choroidal vasculature in the fellow eyes of patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) by using UWF full-range SS-OCTA.
Patients with RRD demonstrated an elevated risk of retinal tears and peripheral retinal degeneration in the fellow eye. Compared with healthy individuals, the fellow eyes in RRD patients were found to have a significantly larger foveal avascular zone with lower retinal vessel density, mainly in the temporal and superior areas.
Meanwhile, extensive choroidal thinning and significantly reduced choroidal perfusion in temporal region were noticed in the fellow eyes, suggesting that choroidal perfusion defect might play a role in leading corresponding retina to structural damage as a result of being more susceptible to ischemia and hypoxia.
A 400kHz speed swept source OCTA (BMizar, TowardPi Medical) was used in this study for high-resolution UWF imaging with comprehensive retinal and choroidal quantifications, providing promising tool to detect the early abnormalities in retina and choroid in the fellow eyes in RRD patients before irreversible structural damage occurs.
