Subretinal Fluid-Gas Interface Revealed by iOCT

2026-06-25 16:35

A fantastic case recently published in Retina revealed by accident the artifactual choroidal elevation due toan air bubble entered the subretinal space during subretinal injection in alive pig by using an innovative digital navigation microscope (FOcean, TowardPi).

An indocyanine green (ICG)-filledsubretinal bleb with an air bubble in the center was shown in the fundus view(fig.A, yellow asterisk). High-resolution intraoperative OCT images revealed artifactualchoroidal elevation beneath the air bubble due to the refractive indexdifference (fig.B, red arrow) and hyperreflectivity at the retina-gas interface(fig.B white arrow). Without the interference from the air bubble, clear retinaand choroid structures were visualized on real-time iOCT imaging, demonstratingoutstanding penetration capability.

This case was authored by Dr. ZhangwanyuWei and Prof. Weihong Yu from Peking Union Medical College Hospital andHongyaan Bao from TowardPi Medical.
