A study recently published in Retina compared the efficacy of detecting diabetic retinal neovascularization (NV) using UWF full-range SS-OCTA, UWF color fundus photography (UWF-CFP), and UWF fluorescein angiography (UWF-FA).
Ninety eyes were included in this cross-sectional study. The results demonstrated high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of UWF SS-OCTA for NV detection, as well as excellent agreement between UWF-OCTA and UWF-FA. UWF-OCTA, combined with UWF-CFP, may improve panoramic NV detection and serve as a reliable, noninvasive alternative to FA for diabetic retinopathy evaluation.
A 400 kHz swept-source OCTA system (BMizar, TowardPi Medical) was used in this study to provide high-resolution UWF imaging of neovascularization details. Numerous quantitative metrics, including vessel density, non-perfusion area, and FAZ parameters, are available on the device for quantitative evaluation and efficient management of DR.
This research was conducted by Dr. Kangyan Zheng and the team of Prof. Liang Zhang and Prof. Dan Cao from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital.
