(Summary description)Vortex vein drainage systems in healthy individuals imaged by UWF full range SS-OCTA! New research recently published in <Translational Vision Science & Technology> investigated the choroidal characteristics of vortex vein (VV) drainage systems in healthy individuals by using ultra-widefield full range SS-OCTA. According to the results, one of the most significant characterizations of the VV drainage system identified was the superotemporal drainage system emerging as the preferential system in healthy eyes. The sex differences on perfusion in the VV drainage system was obvious. Higher CVI was observed for men compared to women. The occurrence of intervortex venous anastomosis, which is a common feature of pachychoroid spectrum disorders, was observed to be most frequent in the temporal quadrant. “The VV drainage system may be considered a promising biomarker for ocular diseases.” A 400kHz speed swept source OCTA (hashtag#BMizar, TowardPi Medical) was used in this study to achieve 24mmx20mm choroid OCTA with built-in AI-assisted algorithm. Five 24mmx20mm images can be intelligently montaged into a UWF choroid image (>200 degrees) automatically to visualize complete vortex vein ampullas in four quadrants. Quantification parameters of choroid OCTA, such as 3D-CVI, have high repeatability and accuracy based on precise segmentation algorithm. This research is authored by Dr. Zhonghua Luo, Dr. Xiaomei Xiong, Dr. Shengsong Huang, etc. team of Prof. Xiaoling Liang and Prof. Shanshan Yu, from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-Sen University.
