(Summary description)Eye health is the "barometer" of our quality of life. In today's environment, which is filled with various digital screens, the chances of people needing eye examinations and treatments have greatly increased. However, our understanding of the large devices used to examine human eyes is still limited. Ophthalmology is actually a subject that involves diagnosing diseases by looking at images. When diagnosing, ophthalmologists now use examination equipment, such as fundus cameras and OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), to observe various structures of the patient's eye. This helps make clear judgement of diseases that are originally complex and difficult to diagnose. Through OCTA (Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography), it is even possible to detect subtle blood flow conditions in the fundus. By observing changes in the fundus and blood flow, doctors can make more comprehensive assessments of certain systemic diseases.

Eye health is the "barometer" of our quality of life.

In the field of high-end ophthalmic equipment, there have not been many domestic enterprises focusing on independent research and development over the years. Both their scale and technology could not compete with imported international brands. Against this backdrop, in recent years, domestic brands have started driving innovation, resulting in the emergence of a number of high-end ophthalmic medical equipment brands with independent research and development capabilities. Among them, TowardPi Medical has been dedicated to independent research and development. Although it is a relatively new company in the industry, it has achieved significant breakthroughs and market recognition in their six major categories of high-end ophthalmic instruments and equipment.

Professor Liu Kun, Deputy Director of the Ophthalmology Center at Shanghai General Hospital and Deputy Director of the National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Diseases using 400kHz Swept-Source OCT from TowardPi Medical

Professor Liu Kun, Deputy Director of the Ophthalmology Center at Shanghai General Hospital and Deputy Director of the National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Diseases, said in an interview: "In the past, there was a common belief that China's domestic equipment was inferior to imported brands. However, some of our domestic equipment now actually far surpasses imported devices in terms of precision and accuracy. With domestic equipment like TowardPi's OCT and OCTA, we can now see more clearly and thoroughly."

The development and popularization of high-end ophthalmic equipment are also based on the common challenges faced in medical development, including medical risks. "These devices allow us to diagnose more accurately and avoid some medical risks. In the past, the diagnosis of diseases needed to rely on fundus fluorescence angiography, which required injection. However, some patients are allergic to fluorescence, which results in some severe allergies and even shock reactions every year. Now with (ultra-wide field) OCTA, the injection is no longer needed, and the blood vessel image can be clearly displayed in just several seconds. This allows us to be more precise in the diagnosis of diseases and allows us to timely and accurately optimize the relevant treatment means to achieve the best treatment effect."

Professor Liu Kun explained the practical benefits for patients: "It has also made seeking medical treatment more convenient for the public. Previously, it would take about half an hour for a patient to complete the entire examination process. Now, each examination takes just a few seconds, allowing more patients to complete as many eye examinations as possible in one day with fewer hospital visits. Moreover, the new ultra-widefield OCTA is a non-invasive examination that can be performed anytime and anywhere for follow-ups. Doctors can promptly determine whether there has been an improvement after treatment and precisely adjust the relevant treatment methods to achieve better therapeutic outcomes for patients."

TowardPi Medical's earliest and currently main product is Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and its derivative technology, OCTA (Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography)

TowardPi Medical's earliest and currently main product is Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and its derivative technology, OCTA (Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography). It is like a combination of CT scanning and angiography but with a resolution 100 times higher than CT, while being completely non-radioactive and non-invasive. It is an important device for precise ophthalmic examinations.

"Our ultra-high-speed swept-source OCT technology allows patients to achieve ultra-widefield blood flow imaging within the time they can cooperate. Previously, non-invasive fundus vascular examinations covered only a very small area because the data collection required was immense, and the time patients could cooperate was very limited. By significantly increasing the scanning speed, we can obtain more image information in a shorter time, thus achieving a large-area fundus blood flow imaging in one capture. This clinical function was included in the 2023 guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy in China. The <People's Daily> also reported extensively on this," explained Wang Yingqi, CEO of TowardPi Medical.

"In the past, doctors couldn't know the depth information below the lesion during ophthalmic surgery. TowardPi's intraoperative real-time 3D OCT navigation allows doctors to see a holographic 3D image instantly during surgery, with very low latency and a resolution that reaches micron levels. This function was showcased at the National Ophthalmology Academic Conference in Changsha in September last year and received huge attention and coverage from the <People's Daily>."

The clinical field of ophthalmology is interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary, with many new technologies emerging every year. These technologies are forward-looking and valuable for clinical application, but they often require 10, 20, or even more years to be translated into practical products and functions through the integration of medicine and engineering. Shortening the time and cycle for these new technologies to be transformed into clinically valuable products and functions allows patients to benefit from technological advancements more quickly.

Wang Yingqi continued: "Scientific research talents often lack market understanding. We researchers can develop a series of cutting-edge technical parameters, but if these parameters cannot be transformed into specific medical functions and do not meet clinical needs, they will not have significant commercial and market value."

Currently, domestic high-end precision ophthalmic instruments have become widespread in our daily lives. For example, TowardPi's products are widely distributed, especially in China’s leading hospitals, ophthalmology centers, and teaching hospitals. They are found not only in first- and second-tier cities but also from Heilongjiang in the north to Hainan in the south, and from Xinjiang in the west. The field of ophthalmology, particularly units that require high-end precision instruments, has long relied on imported high-end brands. Ophthalmologists are well-versed in these devices.

Now, TowardPi has received formal export orders from countries including Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Japan, etc. — markets known for their high medical standards and discerning eyes. The fact that TowardPi can enter these markets at even higher prices than world-renowned brands holds profound significance.

Zhou Jian, Vice President Global Affairs of TowardPi Medical, commented: "Choosing OCT as the first product to enter the market among high-end precision ophthalmic instruments has several reasons. Firstly, OCT is an imaging device, and the differences in image quality are easily comparable, making it very clear and having a good dissemination effect. On the other hand, OCT can be described as the culmination of various technologies, including optical, electronic, embeding, algorithms, and the growing field of artificial intelligence, making it a true 'powerhouse'. If there are weaknesses in any aspect, it is impossible to produce an absolutely outstanding OCT."

"TowardPi is set to launch optical biometric measurement instruments, ultra-widefield fundus cameras, and surgical microscopes this year, all of which have traditionally been dominated by legacy brands in the high-end market. This is also our goal and pursuit. We look forward to further expanding the practicality of our technology, reducing costs, expanding the applicability of our products, and providing better services to more people with higher efficiency. By using technology to benefit more people. This is the value and goal of our technological development," Zhou Jian explained.
