(Summary description)New research recently published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology quantitatively measured retinal curvature (RC) in children with myopia and explored its association with refractive status using UWF full-range SS-OCTA and an integrated three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction system on the device. Retinal curvature serves as a novel quantitative metric characterizing retinal steepness and provides new insights for deeper research into ocular morphology. Using integrated auto-segmentation and retinal reconstruction software based on UWF 24mm x 20mm OCTA scans, Bruch’s membrane was identified and isolated. Each point’s Gaussian curvature on Bruch’s membrane was calculated as RC according to axial length (AL) (fig).

New research recently published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology quantitatively measured retinal curvature (RC) in children with myopia and explored its association with refractive status using UWF full-range SS-OCTA and an integrated three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction system on the device.

In this cross-sectional study, mean RC was assessed in concentric circles (RC I to RC VI) with diameters of 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 mm around the fovea (fig). The results indicated that the progression of myopia led to a steeper macular retina in children, while the peripheral retina became flatter. Age may be the primary factor driving alterations in retinal morphology, while choroidal thinning also contributed to a protuberant retina, and axial elongation resulted in the flattening of the peripheral retina. “Retinal curvature, as a novel method for researching ocular morphological abnormalities, offers a convenient means to monitor changes in retinal morphology and potentially provides new insights into disease diagnosis and follow-up care.”

A 400 kHz speed full-range swept-source OCTA (BMizar, TowardPi Medical) was used in this research to assess ocular morphology in a 24mm x 20mm ultra-wide field. Retinal curvature based on 3D reconstruction, together with structural measurements and flow quantifications, are automatically calculated on the device.

This research was authored by Dr. Hotin Wu and the team of Prof. Xun Xu and Prof. Xiangui He from Shanghai General Hospital, along with Prof. Li Huo, chief scientist of TowardPi Medical.
