New Clinical Marker for Posterior Staphyloma—Fundus Curvature Based on UWF SS-OCT

Recent research published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology investigated the ability of ultra-widefield swept-source OCT (UWF SS-OCT) to quantify fundus curvature and detect posterior staphyloma. The study concluded that UWF SS-OCT-based fundus curvature may improve the detection and quantitative assessment of posterior staphyloma in high myopia. Detailed morphological patterns of posterior staphyloma were revealed through curvature value maps and curvature deviation maps. Larger maximum posterior curvature, macular curvature deviation, and posterior curvature deviation (PCD) were associated with higher degrees of myopia, more severe myopic maculopathy, and poorer best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Among these parameters, PCD demonstrated the highest sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing the presence of posterior staphyloma.

Protective Effects on Myopic Guinea Pigs Discovered by Full-Range SS-OCTA

A recent study published in Frontiers in Medicine investigated the protective effects of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) combined with bilberry extract (BE) on myopic guinea pigs using full-range SS-OCTA. Choroidal changes, including choroidal thickness (ChT) and the choroidal vessel index (CVI), were evaluated alongside refractive error and axial length.

Subthreshold Laser for cCSC Eyes Evaluated Using Full-Range SS-OCTA

A recent study published in Photodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy compared the visual and anatomical outcomes of 689 nm laser therapy (689-LT) versus continued subthreshold micropulse laser (SML) therapy in eyes with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (cCSC) that had shown poor responsiveness to initial SML treatment. The study assessed the choroidal structure and vasculature in both groups using full-range swept-source OCT angiography (SS-OCTA), focusing on choroidal thickness (CT) and the three-dimensional choroidal vascularity index (3D-CVI).

“Motorbike” in Anterior Chamber Captured by TowardPi Full-Range AS-OCT

A 70-year-old male experienced persistent, distending pain in his right eye 11 days ago without an obvious cause, accompanied by ipsilateral headache, photophobia, and tearing. His right eye was found to have no light perception, with high intraocular pressure (51 mmHg), conjunctival hyperemia, a dilated pupil, and corneal haze and edema. High-resolution panoramic anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT) clearly showed the lens dislocated into the anterior chamber with lens protein extravasation, and a membranous protrusion was visualized in the pupillary area. This patient was diagnosed with phacogenic glaucoma secondary to lens dislocation.

The New Developments and Clinical Applications of AS-OCTA

A review recently published in Medicina (Kaunas) thoroughly summarized the new developments and clinical applications of anterior segment OCTA (AS-OCTA) for the cornea and ocular surface. The review was authored by Dr. Brian Juin Hsien Lee and the team of Prof. Marcus Ang from the Singapore National Eye Centre.

Conjunctival Clues on Coronary Artery Disease Discovered by TowardPi AS-OCTA

Research recently published in Microvascular Research quantified conjunctival microvascular characteristics and investigated their relationship with the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) by using full-range swept-source anterior segment OCTA (AS-OCTA). This study revealed that both vessel area density and vessel length density of conjunctiva decreased significantly in CAD patients. Additionally, microvascular junction density was found significantly associated with the severity of CAD among women patients. All these results indicated that conjunctival microvessels were associated with both the presence and severity of CAD, suggesting its potential role in cardiovascular risk screening and severity assessment.

Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy Captured by 400kHz SS-OCTA

Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy captured by 400kHz SS-OCTA. “TowardPi OCTA reveals the presence of retinal neovascularization which is the hallmark of the disease, allowing us to set an accurate diagnosis quickly (no dilation) without the need of interventional examinations (e.g . FFA) . Wide-field OCTA images allows the accurate assessment of extensive areas of retinal ischemia!” Golden Signature Series of TowardPi. Resolve the Crisis of Choroidal Hemangioma with UWF Full Range SS-OCTA!

A 59-year-old male patient complained diminution of vision for recent 4 months. A round orange-red solitary mass superior nasal to optic disc was discovered by slim-lamp examination. UWF SS-OCT revealed significant elevated choroid corresponding to the solitary mass on SLO image together with irregular and disrupted RPE and outer retina, intraretinal edema and subretinal fluid under fovea (fig.1 OCT). Hyperreflective spots in vitreous could also be seen. On UWF SS-OCTA image of choriocapillaris slab, a dense vascular network in the tumor area was clearly visualized compared with the surrounding normal choriocapillaris (fig.1). UWF OCTA and quantifications of choroidal Haller’s and Sattler’s layer revealed the significantly thickened tumor and the medium-sized vessels inside the tumor with high vessel density (fig.2). This patient was diagnosed as circumscribed choroidal hemangioma. 3D UWF OCTA reconstructed the stereo structure of the fundus and the relationship between hemangioma and disc (gif). A 400kHz speed swept source OCTA (#BMizar, TowardPi Medical) was used in this case to capture ultrawide field 24mm x 20mm full range SS-OCTA images of choroidal hemangioma. OCTA of choroidal Haller’s and Sattler’s layer can be achieved with built-in algorithm together with comprehensive quantifications. 3D reconstruction of structures and vessels are available for all-sizes. 3D Choroidal Changes in Coronary Artery Disease Patients Quantified by Full-Range SS-OCTA

Recent research published in Photodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy quantitatively analyzed three-dimensional (3D) choroidal changes in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients using full-range SS-OCTA. This study provided more detailed insights into 3D choroidal characteristics, including choroidal thickness (CT), choroidal vascularity index (CVI), choroidal vascular volume/area (CVV/a), and choroidal stromal volume/area (CSV/a).
