A potential postoperative complication of SMILE (Femtosecond Laser Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the development of corneal intralamellar microstriae, which is the micro-folds within the corneal stroma. In the past, surgeons had to rely on experience alone to assess whether the corneal layers were smoothly repositioned. Now, with the assistance of high-resolution intraoperative OCT images under 100KHz digital navigation surgical microscope (FOcean, TowardPi), successful and high-efficient repair surgery can be accomplished with great confidence.
A 21-year-old male after SMILE was diagnosed as intralamellar microstriae in his left eye .
During the repair surgery, the micro-folds in stroma could be clearly observed.
The folds were precisely repositioned under the guidance of iOCT.
The success of the repair and the surgical outcome could be reconfirmed immediately before the end of the procedure.
