A major difference is the bright boundary of posterior cortex indicates the detachment of vitreous (PVD as Fig1). The signal of Posterior precortical vitreous pocket (PPVP) is so weak that it is difficult to be visualized clearly with traditional OCT. Things changed until comes swept source technology, especially the new generation full range SS-OCT (Fig2). Both vitreous and choroid signals were brought to ideal levels, which is very helpful for the understanding of vitreous conditions. When you have TowardPi, you will find PPVP is more common than PVD, which is the truth because PPVP develops even from childhood. And in many cases, PPVP coexists with PVD. (As in Fig1 again).
It doesn’t have to be multiple averaged scans in one position to boost the signal. Our coming post will show the structure of vitreous in a dynamic 3D scan, please follow.
PS. Both pictures were selected to the 36 finalist of ICOOR(2021) image gallery, Fig2 was additionally awarded the best 3.
