Research recently published in Acta Ophthalmologica evaluated choroidal changes in high myopic (HM) patients with posterior staphyloma (PS) and explore their association with Gaussian curvature (K) using UWF-OCTA.

HM patients with wide macular PS (Type I PS) and without any PS (control) were recruited in this study. Results showed that type I PS eyes had increased Highest K values (Kmax) with higher choroidal vascularity volume (CVV), choroidal thickness (CT) and volume in the peripheral region and significantly lower choroidal vascularity index (CVI) in central region. A negative association between macular Kmax and central CVI was revealed while in the peripheral region, Kmax showed a positive correlation with choroidal thickness and volume. All these results indicated a potentially reorganized structure and circulation in choroid.

A 400 kHz speed swept-source OCTA (BMizar, TowardPi Medical) was used in this study to calculate the retinal curvature according to AL with built-in software as well as comprehensive choroidal parameters in 3-dimension.

This research is authored by team of Prof. Zhikun Yang from Peking Union Medical College Hospital.
