(Summary description)Recent research published in Photodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy quantitatively analyzed three-dimensional (3D) choroidal changes in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients using full-range SS-OCTA. This study provided more detailed insights into 3D choroidal characteristics, including choroidal thickness (CT), choroidal vascularity index (CVI), choroidal vascular volume/area (CVV/a), and choroidal stromal volume/area (CSV/a).

The results revealed that the Gensini score of coronary stenosis was significantly associated with certain choroidal parameters. CT, CVV/a, and CSV/a were reduced in CAD patients, particularly in the 6mm-diameter area beneath the fovea. A combination of FAZ parameters and CT values demonstrated potential in predicting CAD. The visualization and quantification of the choroid provided a novel method for screening and diagnosing CAD. Moreover, 3D choroidal parameters could serve as promising biomarkers for evaluating CAD.
A 400 kHz swept-source OCTA (BMizar, TowardPi Medical) was used in this study to visualize and quantify choroidal changes in CAD patients, offering comprehensive three-dimensional choroid quantifications.
This research was conducted by Dr. Zhaoxia Zheng and the team led by Prof. Xiaobing Yu from Beijing Hospital.
