New research recently published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology quantitatively measured retinal curvature (RC) in children with myopia and explored its association with refractive status using UWF full-range SS-OCTA and an integrated three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction system on the device.
Retinal curvature serves as a novel quantitative metric characterizing retinal steepness and provides new insights for deeper research into ocular morphology. Using integrated auto-segmentation and retinal reconstruction software based on UWF 24mm x 20mm OCTA scans, Bruch’s membrane was identified and isolated. Each point’s Gaussian curvature on Bruch’s membrane was calculated as RC according to axial length (AL) (fig).

In this cross-sectional study, mean RC was assessed in concentric circles (RC I
A 400 kHz speed full-range swept-source OCTA (BMizar, TowardPi Medical) was used in this research to assess ocular morphology in a 24mm x 20mm ultra-wide field. Retinal curvature based on 3D reconstruction, together with structural measurements and flow quantifications, are automatically calculated on the device.
This research was authored by Dr. Hotin Wu and the team of Prof. Xun Xu and Prof. Xiangui He from Shanghai General Hospital, along with Prof. Li Huo, chief scientist of TowardPi Medical.
